  54. interface for GNU Chess or for the Internet Chess Server, or can be
  55. used to play out games manually or from game files.  See the manual

  59. borrows its colors, icons and piece bitmaps from XChess, which was
  60. written and copyrighted by Wayne Christopher.  We thank him for his
  61. work on XChess.  Tim Mann <mann@src.dec.com> is responsible for XBoard
  62. versions 2.0 and following.

  65. If you improve XBoard, please send a message about your changes to
  66. bug-gnu-chess, and Tim will get in touch with you about merging them
  67. in to the main line of development.

  69. CAVEATS
  70.  
  71. XBoard depends on the Xt Intrinsics and Athena Widget Set of X11R4 or
  72. later.  In particular, X11R3 just won't do.  At this writing, the
  73. standard DEC Ultrix and SUN releases won't do either.  The Athena
  74. widgets are either missing in the DEC standard distribution or in the
  75. wrong (R3) place in SUN OpenWindows.

  77. XBoard works best with version 4.0 of GNU Chess.  Older versions may
  78. also work, but they are unsupported.  The GNU Chess project requests
  79. that you get a current copy of GNU Chess rather than using older,
  80. bug-ridden versions.  GNU Chess must be compiled with the -DXBOARD
  81. flag for use with XBoard.  Use the "make gnuchessx" target in GNU
  82. Chess 4.0 to do this.

  84. The Free Software Foundation would prefer to be able to distribute an
  85. X chessboard program covered only by the GNU General Public License
  86. and unencumbered by any other copyright.  If you can help with this,
